When My Father Forgot Me

My father always drove me to school and always picked me up.  If he was not there when school was out, I called to remind him and I waited.  I knew he was coming to get me.

When I asked to be taken some place because there was something  wanted, my father would tell me to wait until he finished work.  I never considered the fact that he was probably tired and just wanted to rest.  So, when he arrived home and I was waiting to go he would say “Go get your shoes on and let’s go.”

When I was  across country and overseas I would  call my father according to whatever time zone I was in and he answered.  The phone may have had to serve as an alarm and awaken him, but I let it ring because I knew he would answer.  And he did.  Whether he was at the hospital or office or home, there were direct numbers his children would  call to contact him.  And we used those numbers like kids in a candy store with no regard for his being tired, sleepy, hungry or occupied.  My father never once told me he was busy, or too busy for whatever I had to say or wanted to do.   My father would have me “sit still for a moment”  or “hold that thought”  while he attended to a patient or “make haste” when he arrived late and my mother was watching the clock  because we always ate dinner  as a family when he arrived home, regardless of the hour –and sometimes this meant after bedtime.

My earthly father  never forgot me and always answered when I called.  Although my father died his presence is still;  and my God is always present so I do  not need a phone.  It is like this with your health and sound mind.  You have to always be aware of your “self” and just like a good father be present in a sound mind to know what you are truly doing.  Because it is only in hindsight that I truly see that what my father did for me as a child reflected his image. Legacy is not what you have, it is what is said  about you when you cease to walk this Earth.
