My father would always say “Children, keep your joy. If you do not have joy, what do you have? You have to find what brings you joy, my darlings, and keep it.”
I would frown and sometimes say ” I have things I like to do but I just don’t know what you mean, Daddy.”
And my father would look at me with a half smile and in a soft voice reply (exactly every time):” I cannot answer that for you. Your personal joy is just that, personal, and just for you. When you find it you will know it, just remember to keep it. And keep it with you always, regardless of the situation or condition, ALWAYS keep your joy.”
Well today I understand more than ever what my father meant. Joy is unspeakable. Joy cannot be bought yet it is priceless. Personal joy does not come from any outside source. Joy has no limit and no age. The joy of a child is the same joy of that child as an adult. This joy comes from within and it keeps everything whole and complete. And regardless of the situation, if I know what brings me joy, I might be able to find it. If I keep my joy, it will always keep me. What do I mean? I mean my joy will keep me from going down too far and staying too long. I may get depressed, my joy will stop me from being too depressed. I may be grieving, my joy will stop me from grieving too long. I may be in mourning, my joy will stop me from morning too long. I may go far off the track, my joy will prevent me from going too far and bring me back home. My personal joy and my honest heart will (with time) force me to be responsible by seeking only what I truly want. And in wanting, there must be a sound mind and a healthy fit body.
